Dirty Oil Can Damage Your Furnace

November 24, 2020 by Combined Energy Services Leave a Comment

The importance of where you buy your home heating oil

Recently, one of our services techs sent in a photo of a filthy oil furnace filter. It was dirty. Not just routine dirty but caked with grime and sludge. So much sludge that it was piled up on top of the filter.

The first question was how long ago was this furnace cleaned? He answered – last year. Okay so this was someone who took care of their HVAC equipment. It was cleaned on a regular cycle not 10 years ago.

The next question was what in the world caused this kind of gunk to build up over the course of a year? More than likely the homeowner bought cheap or discounted oil from an unscrupulous oil company. What? Home heating oil isn’t all the same? The answer is a huge NO.

While it’s not as prevalent now as it used to be (and in some areas it’s illegal), some retailers mix waste oil or recycled oil into their home heating oil blends. Used motor oil and other types of used oil can be mixed into your home heating oil. Motor oil is designed not to burn. These additives can clog not only your furnaces nozzle but also create the sludge you see pictured.

This basically deteriorates the efficiency you get from burning clean #2 Heating oil and can wreak havoc on your furnace. The savings you may have realized from purchasing a load of “cheap” oil may very well be eaten up by the cost of replacing your furnace.

The next time you’re tempted to “save” some money, keep in mind that what you save today may very well cost you in repairs and replacements tomorrow. The only thing Combined Energy Services may add to our home heating oil in the winter is an anti-gel additive for home heating oil tanks that are outside. You are getting exactly what you are paying for – #2 home heating oil.

Installing a Generator

Thinking of installing a generator? Don’t wait too long!

As if 2020 hasn’t be strange enough, Colorado State University has just updated it’s 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season forecast. According to The Weather Channel, CSU is predicting 24 namedgenerator propane tank hidden in shrubs storms – the second most on record. This means we’ll blow throw the rest of the alphabet and move straight into the Greek Alphabet with Alpha, Beta & Gamma. This has only happened once before in the record smashing 2005 hurricane season.

Not to panic anyone, Tropical Storm Isaias had people scrambling. Over 3.7 million people were without power at one time or another. CES had people looking for propane tanks and service immediately.

While we can typically work quickly to get your propane tank installed, there are rules and regulations that must be followed. In New Jersey, for example, a permit must be filed, and inspections must be completed by a building inspector.

whole house generator propane tank installationSo, while you still have time – there’s over 90% of the hurricane season left – plan, purchase and install your new whole house generator sooner rather than later. On our generator page, you can see a list of trusted contractors that we have worked successfully with in the past.

Once you have your contractor selected and know the size of the generator, give us a call. We’ll send one of our knowledgeable sales folks out to look over your plan and size the propane tank. We size propane tanks with enough propane to run your generator for a week. Seems like a long time, right? It’s not. If there’s a bad enough storm and trees/powerlines are down, we may not be able to get to you quickly to refill your tank. Sizing the tank correctly to carry you through is an important part of the process. This is not the area to skimp on your generator installation.

Give us a call at 800-874-1975 or complete the form below. You’ll be glad you spoke with Combined Energy Services.

Comfort and Warmth

Nothing can replicate the warmth and comfort of a fireplace or stove. Coming inside after a long day of working or playing in the cold weather and sitting in front of the fire with a beverage of choice can be priceless. And then you think about the mess…wood chips and back all over the carpet, soot, ash on your favorite collectibles, the shrieking of the smoke alarms when you “accidentally” forget to open the damper.

All that can be a thing of the past with a propane fireplace, log set or stove. Imagine coming inside, picking up the remote or flicking a switch and turning your fireplace on. Instantly you have the beauty and comfort.

The technology and installation flexibility of propane equipment make it the preferred choice for retrofit and new construction applications. These products allow for installation virtually anywhere and there is solution for almost situation.

Have an existing wood burning fireplace? How about a propane insert or log set? These options replicate that the look and feel of burning wood but are clean burning and easy to maintain.

Tire of feeding logs or pellets into a wood stove? Then a propane stove is for you! You will still get the heat you need but will eliminate the effort to continuously fill the stove. No more carrying 40-pound bags to fill the hopper or stacking firewood and carting it inside.

To get a free quote on installing a propane fireplace, give us a call at 800-874-1975 or complete the form below.
