10 Tips to Help You Save Energy This Summer

Energy can heat up a lot more than hot dogs and hamburgers during the summer in the Northeast where the heat and humidity make it difficult to stay comfortable.

We all need air conditioning to stay comfortable during the soaring temperatures.  If you’re lucky enough to own an central air conditioning unit that runs off propane, you’re ahead of the game in energy savings.

You can still stay cool while saving energy and money this summer by following the tips below to prepare your home and maintain your equipment.

  1. Use a programmable thermostat. You can easily control the temperature in your home by setting the temperature as high as you comfortable can, the smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your cooling costs will be. Increasing the temperature by even one degree can have a huge impace on your bill.
  2. Adjust your home’s temperature while you’re away. Don’t worry about wasting energy cooling your home when no one is there to enjoy it.  A programmable thermostat makes adjusting the temperature to a comfortable level easy when you return.
  3. Shade your home from direct sunlight. Shades, drapes and awnings can effectively block the sun from heating your home.  Preventing the sun from heating your home will make a huge difference in comfort levels.
  4. Avoid ovens, clothes dryers, or appliances that produce heat. Use stove stops or your barbeque to avoid heating your home.
  5. Turn off lights. During the day turn off the lights and make sure to turn off lights you’re not using in the evening.  When you have lights on in the daytime it can generate additional heat, and unneccesary lighting can add extra costs to your energy bill.
  6. Prevent hot air from leaking in. Seal any cracks and openings in your home to avoid hot air from leaking into the home.  You can use caulk or weather stripping to prevent leakage around windows and doors.
  7. Take advantage of cool breezes. Turn off your air conditioner and opening the windows in the evening or when the breeze is cool to help cool your home without spending money.
  8. Replace filters regularly. Replace your air conditioners filters on a monthly bases.  A clogged air filter makes your air conditioner work harder, in turn, costing you more money.
  9. Use ceiling fans. Ceiling fans help improve the air flow and assist with cooling your home when you don’t need air conditioning.  This is great for days that aren’t too hot but are slightly uncomfortable.
  10. Get a Propane Central Air System. Propane is an inexpensive choice that’s readily avilable throughout the United States.  It can be easily transported, making it a great choice for second homes.

Following these tips will help you stay cool and save energy this summer.
